Super Bowl Party at Mayne Stage

I received an email from the Mayne Stage newsletter and they will be throwing the Super Bowl up on their 22 foot screen. I have to stop and think about what that means -- 22 foot screen? I haven't caught a game there but I can't imagine that it is anything less than awesome.

For Super Bowl Sunday, they will be opening up at 11 and food and drink will be available in the theater area provided by Act One Cafe.

Mayne Stage is located at the intersection of Morse Avenue and Wayne.

Pillars is Open

Pillars opened today and I convinced my neighbor to pass up Starbucks so that we could take a peak. I must say that I am really happy that this place opened up; the second I walked in I felt like I was somewhere that has interest in making a strong statement. Some may not like this, but it feels like a place that belongs in Lincoln Park or Bucktown.

First off, the ambience is fantastic. The place feels super cozy and open. There is a fireplace to enjoy in a smaller closed off section for the coffee drinkers. There are actually two small congregating areas and one large dining area. It is evident that the place was built to be green, with many of the materials used being recycled goods. It looks very clean and feels good to be in the place.

The menu looks promising, too: no preservatives used and all ingredients are organic. They have a number of salads, panini sandwiches, soups/chili, and even burgers. This place just added instant value to those that live around here.

Peoples Gas Wrecking Shop in RP

Peoples Gas has a huge project ongoing where gas mains are being replaced all over the city. While I am all for infrastructure improvement, I have my fears about PG's ability to fix all of the sidewalks and landscaping that they are ripping out on the back end of these projects. I spend a lot of time cleaning up our parkway and courtyard, and they have already ripped out a few bushes and burried bulbs to only replace with SAND. Yes, beautiful and impossible-to-cultivate in SAND. I've learned that they will be trenching through our courtyard as well, and I'm hoping this is only a rumor. PG probably wants to get in, drop the main, and get out as quick as possible. That means all the work some of us do keeping our yards nice and our plants happy will be suffering a big setback with this disruption.

"Tired of All These Honkeys"

I just got off the Red Line where I came from my office downtown. As I walked out the door onto the sidewalk, I held the door open for a man approaching the same entrance. His way of thanking me was looking at me and saying "I'm tired of all these honkeys around here."

Well I guess I'm a honkey, so he's got me there. I have no idea what it is like to be a black man in this world, but I sure as hell wouldn't consider saying anything like that to anyone of any race. What is it that he is tired of, it's confusing me... Is it because I go to my job and earn a living, and in turn pay taxes? Is it because I participate in neighborhood and community improvement projects? Is it because I pick up trash that people leave all over the sidewalks and parkways? Is it because I generally try to respect people and be a decent person?

Oh well. He can choose to hate me and the rest of the white folks he shares the 'hood with if it makes his day any better.

It was weird for me today to root against the Bears. It took me a while (a few years) to warm up to them after moving from Colorado. The Broncos played the Bears today, and I had to choose: my past or my now. With football, and with only 16 games a season, I still have to keep the Broncos at home with me. I root for the Bears any time they aren't playing against my boys. Today, it was Tebow, but more importantly Matt Prater with a 59 and 51 yard field goals that did the Bears in. Crazy game.

Brunch at the Growling Rabbit

We were talking about getting a bite to eat for lunch somewhere around the neighborhood today, when a post came through on Facebook advertising brunch at the Growling Rabbit. We decided that it was a lock since we had yet to try the food.

The Growling Rabbit is a cafe located in Ennui's old location, at the southeast corner of Sheridan and Lunt. They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as pastries and coffee. Today they also had Taste come by to offer mimosas and bloodies.

Let me just say that it has been a long time since I have had a breakfast or a brunch at a restaurant that was not only tasty, but left me feeling somewhat healthy. This is NOT a greasy spoon, and after the Thanksgiving holiday, it was a welcome change. I had a breakfast burrito, that is served up with egg whites, fresh pico de gallo, and avacado rolled up in a grilled tortilla. Delicious. Add a side of fruit or some fresh home style potatoes and you have a good start to your day.

First Sampling of Aqua

I finally got a chance to try out a few items on the Aqua menu this past weekend. I know my last two posts are about Aqua, but bear with me.

Aqua, located at 1146 W. Pratt, has changed only a little bit in appearance since the departure of Ropa. The same tables and chairs remain as wells as the glasses, plates, and silverware. Added are three or four large TVs, a juke box, a pool table, and a video game.

Everything else seems to be vastly different, and as of the late stages of Ropa, vastly improved. The menu was obviously prepared by a trained chef. The ingredients go beyond the scope of a typical sports bar...I think Aqua is still trying to pin down their identity.

I tried some of the more simple items while I watched the Bears game on Sunday. The burger was delicious. The bartender didn't need to tell me that it was grass fed beef, I knew the second I bit into it. The fries are hand-cut and served with some rich and textured garlic spread. Delicious, every fattening bite. Everyone that I've talked to that has sampled the food has had good things to say. From memory there are pastas available, vegetarian food, a steak (which I've heard is enormous), and seafood. Salads, soups and appetizers are available as well. The prices are good, too.

Well Aqua is starting off well. I went last night at 9:00 pm for a quick drink to survey the situation, and they were busy beyond belief. The food looked good and I can contest that the beer flavor and selection is well addressed. Happy that this place is motivated and ready to improve the 'hood.

I walked past Aqua Bar & Grill, located at Pratt & Sheridan (just east of Sheridan), and they are officially open. May just be a soft opening, but I spoke with what appeared to be the chef briefly as I headed home.

So welcome the newest occupant of the space and hopes that they do well.

Things are Happening in RP

All kinds of work is happening at locations along Sheridan right now.

The top picture shows interior work going on at Pillars Social Cafe at the northwest corner of Pratt and Sheridan. Looking through the window, I can see some kind of bamboo finish product as well as Kohler bathroom fixtures. This can tell me right away that the owner is sinking some money into these upgraded features. Good news.

Next we have Aqua Bar & Grill at the northeast corner of Pratt & Sheridan. So far they have added a pool table, video game, juke box, and at least a couple more TVs. That's all that appears new so far.

Finally, the building at North Shore and Sheridan. They have erected extensive scaffolding, but I'm unsure if the building is being modified or demolished. The big roll-off dumpster that says Wrecking makes me think demo. We'll find out soon enough. I believe that Loyola owns this area and this will be a new development, similar to the Morgan...but don't quote me on that.

I have been on the road for the brunt of the past two weeks. Just got back from a long week in sunny San Diego. What's going on here?

The only thing that I can tell is that they have named the bar formerly known as Ropa. It will be called Aqua Bar & Grill. Other than that there is a chili cook-off at the Oasis on Sunday. Anything else?

I have to say, I prefer San Diego weather.

Learn Something New Every Day

I am not sure how I feel about this posting, but I feel that this is information that should be known. Do you recognize this guy? He works at Isam's liquor store near the intersection of Pratt and Sheridan. I see him quite a bit (probably too often) and talk to him most times that I go in. I try to not support Isam's because it is overpriced and I would like the area shops to improve, but I pay for the convenience.

I've gotten off the path. This man's name is Brian Vincent, and I learned today that he is a registered sex offender. My neighbor told me about it today, and I had to look it up. IF you google the Illinois sex offender list, you can map your location. I was reasonably shocked to see how many there are in our neighborhood; I was also shocked to bring up a few photos and recognize a number of these people.

This is public information, so I don't feel too guilty posting this. We should all be aware. Truth is, Brian seems like a nice guy and I don't want to do anything to hurt his chances at making a living. But sometimes you just have to know these things.

Bop 'N Grill

It looks like we have finally found a tenant that will be sticking around, and it's Bop 'N Grill. This location has been a revolving door of restaurants over the past few years, but I think the door is grinding to a stop.

Bop 'N Grill is a Korean burger joint. Yep, that's what I said. I tried out the house burger, which features a fried egg and you can taste the sriracha mixed into the meat. Delicious. It's just my opinion, but I think this place is far better than the more popular pick down the road, 5 Guys. The price is low, the burger is thick and juicy, and the fries are damn good. They offer a number of different specialty burgers as well as kimchi and some other Korean offerings.

I'm very happy that I tried out Bop 'N Grill, and I will be going back. Soon.

By the way, Bop 'N Grill is located on Sheridan Road, between Albion and North Shore (right next to Chipotle).

Please Help Fight for RP

Some of you may know that the gang activity has escalated sharply this year on Ashland Avenue between Pratt and Morse, particularly at Farwell. There have been shots fired reported on an almost daily occurence, and there is not a safe time of day over there. Yesterday, three teenagers were shot there. We have to stand up against this outburst of violence and gang activity.

Tomorrow night there will be a community rally, so to speak. See the letter below from Sargeant Alison Christian of the 24th District.

Holy Mac 'n Cheese

Not a lot of people read my blog. But for those that do, you will be reading my blog for one year less than originally scheduled.

The Mac 'n Cheese I had at Lady Gregory's in Andersonville today has my heart working at full capacity this afternoon and it will surely result in premature death. I could eat a stick of butter for dessert and it would not seem inappropriate. Lady Gregory's, located in the neighborhood to our south and west at 5260 N. Clark, is an Irish pub with some good but cholestoral heavy food offerings. They have a nice sidewalk cafe for those that choose to dine outdoors on a fine day like today. The beer list is phenomenal and I highly recommend the place for anyone that likes food and beer.

Violence Spiking in RP

I've noticed more gunfire at night lately, and according to a community website, I'm not the only one hearing it. Apparently the gangs are rumbling more than usual in the area of Farwell & Ashland. I can hear the shots fired about every third night from my post 4 or 5 blocks away.

Police offer details on Rogers Park drug bust

Evanston police this afternoon released more details about a drug raid they conducted in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood on Friday.

Police Cmdr. James Elliot says that last month investigators from the department’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team -- the gang and narcotics investigation unit -- received information that drugs were being sold to Evanston residents from an apartment just over border in Chicago.

The unit's investigation resulted in a search warrant being approved for the residence, located at 7638 N. Bosworth, Apt. GW, in Chicago.

About 7:25 a.m. Friday, Evanston police executed the search warrant. Elliot says they found over $500 in cash, 23 bags of a brown powder suspected to be heroin, seven bags of a white rock-like substance suspected to be crack cocaine, 35 pills believed to be used as a heroin cutting agent and 15 assorted pills all believed to be controlled substances.

Investigators say they also found evidence of drug packaging materials in the apartment.

Issac Jerome Roach, 26, and Ebony Nicole Sanders, 24, who both live in the apartment, were arrested and were each charged with five counts of unlawful possession of controlled substances and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver.

They are scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Sept. 9.

A third subject was charged with aggravated assault to a peace officer and resisting arrest after he attempted to enter the apartment while police were searching it.

Elliot says that when officers attempted to prevent his access to the apartment, Thomas Eugene Sanders, 20, of 7719 N. Paulina in Chicago, allegedly refused to leave the area and allegedly attempted to punch an officer with his fist.

He's scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13.

I've learned that a bar will be opening there; emphasis on bar, not restaurant. They will be adding some TVs and doing some other kind of renovations in the next few weeks. Be Smart with your Smartphone

We've all been reading stories about people getting attacked for their I-phones or smartphones lately. Kids are going "apple picking" on the Red Line, and are willing to sucker punch you and grab your phone; they are off and onto the train platform before you know what happened. A woman died not long ago after she was pushed down a flight of stairs from a Red Line platform after she had her phone snatched.

My advice? Take these warnings seriously. I narrowly avoided getting hit yesterday at a coffee shop not far from home. I was briefly sat down at the patio to check an incoming email, and I was the only one out there. I was approached by three guys, probably late teens. Two guys positioned themselves as lookouts to identify heat from either direction down the sidewalk; then the 3rd approached me quickly and was asking for a dollar. It all unfolded very quickly, but between the two lookouts and the guy that was getting WAY TOO CLOSE to me to ask for a dollar, it hit me. They were eyeing my phone. I jumped up out of the chair and grabbed my stuff before the guy had a chance to get to my phone or worse. I didn't know if they were going to jump me or hit me or what they had in mind. I startled them just enough to get a pause; in that time the coffee shop's owner and son had seen the commotion and made their way out. The 3 apple pickers were noticeably irritated, but I wasn't going to take a chance. I don't need the nuisance of a black eye and a stolen phone to deal with. One of the kids started going into some rant that I was racist, but all I did was stand up and gather my belongings. They hung around for a while outside of the coffee shop while I retreated inside, but eventually headed elsewhere.

These things are happening, don't let your guard down.

Millenium Park

We busted out of the lovely confines that is Rogers Park and went for a nice walk through Millenium Park and the Mag Mile today. Yeah, it's chock-full of tourists and I see these places every day on the way to work, but it's still amazing. Millenium Park is truly a masterpiece. Sitting on the lawn at Pritzker Pavilion, listening to the music pumping through all of the speakers suspended above was exhilarating. Seeing Cloud Gate (a.k.a. The Bean) was just as interesting today as it was the last 52 times I've seen it. How did they get those panels of steel welded together and polished so smoothly? Not to mention all of the gawking going on by all the tourists and the suburbanites in the city for the day.

Chicago is a pretty damn cool city.

Sweet Atilla's Now Open...& Growling Rabbit?

We noticed last week that Sweet Atilla's bakery opened, so we went in today to get a cup of iced coffee and peruse the joint. Actually, we went last weekend, but even though they were open for business they didn't seem to be prepared. So we came back after giving them 5 or 6 days to get settled.

For those that don't know, this combo bakery/deli is located at Sheridan and Lunt, where Ennui used to be. It appears that the bakery portion of the shop is somewhat up and running, but the deli is very limited in options so far (I think only two sandwiches are available). I've never run a restaurant, so I can't really fairly judge, but it seems that they are no where near ready to be open for business. They don't have too much to offer, the menus aren't available, and the prices and available fare are not even shown on the board above the register. I hope they get everything figured out and off the ground. The prosciutto/brie/pesto sando sounds delish...

Fair warning, however...this place isn't cheap. We're talking downtown prices. We got two iced coffees and small piece of biscotti for almost nine bucks! Ouch.

Great News for the 'Hood

The Loyola CTA station will soon see major improvements after being awarded more than $18 million in funding.

In total, $18.5 million -- including $11 million in federal funds -- will be used to begin immediate repairs to the “dilapidated” Loyola station and conduct an environmental study on the extension and modernization of the Red and Purple lines, a release from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s office said.

The design work for the project is already under way and construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2012.

Durbin secured $10 million in federal funding in the fiscal year 2010 Transportation and Housing Appropriations Bill, and $1 million in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act.

The project will stabilize existing infrastructure, upgrade the existing station and redirect passenger flow for pedestrian safety, the release said. It will include upgrades to the viaduct and improve lighting and visibility. It will also move the station entrance north, and create a plaza in front of the reoriented entrance, increasing safety by keeping pedestrians away from traffic.

Funding through the SAFETEA-LU legislation will be used for land acquisition, and roadway and pedestrian improvements around the station, the release said.

The Red and Purple Line Modernization is proposed to bring those lines to a state of good repair from north of Belmont in Chicago to the Linden station in Wilmette, to reduce travel times and spur economic development along the corridor, the release said.

The Red Line Extension on the South Side is proposed to continue the line from 95th Street to 130th Street, increasing rail access to the city’s South Side.

Record Rainfall in Chicago

From one extreme to another.

The entire City of Chicago experienced the most rainfall recorded in Chicago history this morning and the sewer systems were not able to keep up with the water. To help maintain constant draining, the City installed sewer check-valves that can regulate/pause drainage in certain areas of the city. When this happens water has a tendency to back up and flood garden units and basements of buildings.

What next? Snow? Oh wait, we already had record snowfall earlier this year. Must be the apocalypse.

It's pretty rare to find a nice little movie theater like we have at the 400 Theater near Pratt & Sheridan. Pretty rare to find a theater where you can go an order up a cocktail and be served in the theater. And it's even MORE RARE to find a theater that is barbequing outside the entrance for you to enjoy. Not only do you have 2 drinks for 5$ today, but 5$ will buy you a plate of ribs or a cheeseburger off the grill. Winning.

Ok, so this is NOT what the Morse Theater used to look like. As it turns out, you cannot believe every random schmo that you talk to at the Oasis...who knew. I've been corrected, the theater was NEVER a pool. There may have been a scuba shop up in one of the storefronts at one time or another.

I don't know what the truth is, I'd like to think that we could go for a swim while listening to some live jazz. While being served a Guinness. My world, my rules.

I heard an interesting story last night from one of our fellow RPers about the Mayne Stage. He told me that before the Mayne Stage was resurrected (previously as the Morse Theater), it was a swimming pool where people learned to scuba dive. Really? Scuba on Morse? I guess when you look at the sunken theater floor, you can see how it could have been a pool.

I have a theory of the name 'Mayne' Stage and how it came to be. I liked the previous name, Morse Theater, and didn't think that Mayne had much appeal. Where did the name come from? And then I realized as I walked down Wayne Avenue to the point where it intersects Morse Avenue, right where the theater is. Duh. Wayne + Morse...

Storm Blasts Through

At some point this morning, while I was safely tucked away in my cubicle at the office downtown, a storm blew through here and really jacked some stuff up. I was completely oblivious to what was going on, except for the fact that it appeared to be pitch black outside. When you are downtown and you have no reference points other than the building that opposes your own, it's pretty hard to tell that the wind is blowing and trees are getting smashed to bits all over the place.

I got home this afternoon to find tree branches everywhere, and down at the park there were a couple of trees that were split in half. Large limbs had fallen on cars, windshields smashed.

Finally a good reason to be at the office!

The Dock at Montrose Beach

We heard about this new place that opened up down on Montrose beach called 'The Dock.' So we dusted off the bikes and went for a ride down about four miles to check it out. It's just one large outdoor patio and a bar. Simple, but really cool. You can just hang out under one of the table umbrellas and people watch while listening to some good tunes. They have a fairly big stage directly adjacent, so apparently live music is part of the gig, too.

As far as the dining experience outside of the great view and vibe, the food is kind of pricey but it's really good. I had a burger and it was one of the best that I've had here. They don't provide water on tap, but they will sell you bottled water (so you might save a buck by bringing your own). I would highly recommend that you check this place out. I wish we could get something like this at our beach!

Bed Bugs up in the RP

Every week we see mattresses and couches dumped out in the alley. For once, the common courtesy of bed bug warning was extended to the dumpster divers. This guy actually posted a warning on his furniture, and it should be absolutely mandatory. OMG. I guess I never expected these pieces to be sanitary, but bed bugs are abound. Watch yourselves, suckas.

Ropa is not a Spanish word, but it sure sounds like it. Actually it's short for Rogers Park...and for what it's worth, the joint is done. Tonight, as I have just learned, is the last night they will be open for business. They have been here for just shy of three years, and now Tarik, Oz, Junior, and Manny are moving on.
I have been to Ropa a million and a half times; I am sad to see them go. But I think we all knew that their time was limited and they hung around much longer than they probably should have.
Good luck to the guys and thank you for the time we had with them.

The Unexpected is Expected in RP

Some neighborhoods are quiet...predictable...boring.
Not RP. Here, we might see someone walking a cat around named 'Kilgore Troutman' through the park...on a leash. We might hear an extremely tall shirtless man with long curly hair telling his friends of the myth that is "The Hawk." And we might even be stopped on the sidewalk by a nice middle-aged man who claims to be an honorary member of the life guard (please don't let me get caught in a rough current).

Today we see a green cockatoo, walking down the pier with his owner. And saying hi to my son and junior pirate.

New Farmer's Market Starts Today

Loyola Park Bench Painting 2011

This weekend was the annual bench painting at Loyola Park down at the beach. It's a great time when people of all flavors get together and paint the long concrete bench down by the pier. We were too late this year with our registration, so we didn't get to paint...we were able only to spectate. At the end of day two this artist's section of the wall was hands down my favorite, absolutely beautiful artwork on some unforgiving medium.
It's great to see all of our neighbors down there enjoying time together being creative.

Too Much to Do in One Day

Chicago in the summertime is unreal. Today we had to choose between multiple festivals. You have the Wrigleyville Block Party with the Yanks in town. Taste of Randolph downtown. Rogers Park annual bench painting. Custer's Fair in Evanston. There are probably many more but those were the headliners on my radar. We made it to Custer's Fair and the RP bench painting...both really great.

Midsommar Fest in Andersonville

Today we hit up the fest in Andersonville, first time we've been in the five years we've been here. Wow. It is a huge and very impressive festival: lots of food, music, drink. It goes on and on and on for blocks. Probably the best festival I've been to in Chicago. There are countless Greek food vendors (odd for a Swedish neighborhood) with good gyros. I recommend the Chimney Cake, deliscious. The cheapest beer can be found at Calo's and Reza's, only $3 for good beers.

The building at 6604 N. Sheridan has changed hands...AGAIN. In the relatively short time that we've lived here, I think this location has seen four different proprietors trying on their biz. My thoughts are that it is tough to compete for the Loyola kids' business with Chipotle right next door and 5 Guys down the street.

At any rate, Shabuka is gone. Never tried it, sad to say. But I'm happy that I won't have Shabuka flyers to pick up in the yard and in the bushes. Now they will be 'Curried' flyers, I'm sure.

Anyone tried it? Fast Indian food. The tandori chicken salad shown on the website (www.curried.com) produces some interest.

357 Magnum at Bat 17

We hit up Bat 17 in Evanston today for lunch. Best sandwiches I have ever had. But today I discovered something terrible.

The bloody mary bar at Bat 17 is fantastic. Many different condiments and stuffed olives are available. When I looked at the hot sauce rack (there are probably 60 different varieties available), I didn't know which to try. I opened up about 6 different bottles and took a whiff to see what kind of spice rubbed me the right way. Ass-Kicking hot sauce? Nah. Tapatio? Nope. I stopped at something called 357 Magnum, it smelled good and not too intense. This was a HORRIBLE MISTAKE.

I just did some research on this stuff...there are actual videos posted on youtube of people taking very small tastes of this nuclear waste and melting down! Hotsauceworld.com rates this as the world's hottest hot sauce. I believe them.

I sprinkled into my bloody mary about the same portion that I would use of tabasco: about a teaspoon. It was thick (like lava). One sip of my drink and I felt like I was punched in the mouth. I could only drink 1/2 of it, and it just about ruined my lunch (even though the sando was delicious). About 10 minutes in, my stomach felt like someone was tying it into one giant knot. I wasn't sure if I was having an ulcer or what. I had to go outside, I didn't want to pass out in public. This stuff is no joke, it took about 1/2 hour before I could sit without feeling the burning pain. Try it if you dare...

It's a Different World

The differences between Chicago and my home state of Colorado are numerous, and they don't end with the diversities of terrain and climate. And people. And lifestyle. And on and on.

Take these weapons, for example. In Colorado, you can own an M-16 or an AK-47...I know because I popped off some rounds of each of these that are owned by someone close to me in Colorado last week. It was frightening and somewhat exhilarating. The power of these things is humbling, and I have no problem admitting that I am a wuss. I don't really belong behind the trigger of a gun. Living in Chicago, I am conflicted on the gun issue; I hate the idea of kids running around the streets of RP with firearms. How do we keep ourselves and our neighbors safe? Do we fight against the ownership of guns, OR: Would the world be a safer place if MORE people had guns? I tend to lean towards a gun-free world, but I certainly listen to the arguments from the other side. It's just not possible to blink your eyes and have all of the guns disappear. Unfortunately guns are in the hands of two groups: 1) The informed and the responsible (with a hefty side of wild west sauce), and 2) The unlawful and dangerous.

Anyway, it was interesting to once again see more differences between the western lifestyle and the urban one.

Haitian Easter?

We wanted to go somewhere special and new for our Easter lunch -- so we chose one the neighborhood's most recent installments: Chez Violette (located at 2311 W. Howard). Chez Violette offers Haitian cuisine like rice with black bean sauce, fried pork, a seafood/legume conconcoction, and meat patties (like samosas).

My advice? Figure out the Haitian schedule before you wander in!

We showed up at about 12:30 this afternoon to an absolutely deserted restaurant. After reading some of the reviews, I was thinking we would have a hard time getting a place to sit on Easter Sunday. The owner was the only person on hand for the first hour we were there, and she was back in the kitchen preparing some of the food for the day. Immediately I was confused, because the listed lunch time specials are offered from 11 to 3. But it was Easter, so maybe that was the issue?

After sitting at the restaurant for two hours with our one year old (that desperately needed a nap), we had been served a collaboration of food offered up by suggestion of the owner. She more or less brought out samples of what she had prepared as a part of the daily menu...little did I know that we would be charged for the whole thing (and in the end it was expensive). We wanted to leave from the get-go, feeling that she wasn't ready to host any customers, but she made it evident that she would feel badly if we left. She was extremely nice, by the way.

In the end, I guess I wish that we had gone for dinner; it is clearly not a lunch time affair. The patties were flaky but lacked on the meat filling. The pumpkin soup was quite tasty. The fried pork was very dry and not impressive, but the plantains and habanero cole slaw were intriguing.

I can't give the place a bad wrap, the food was pretty good -- just wish we had picked a better time than Easter at 12:30...?

Growling Rabbit?

Ever heard that rumor that a rabbit growls? Or shreeks? It is no rumor that a place called the Growling Rabbit will be opening up where Ennui used to call home (Lunt & Sheridan).

Actually, according to the sign posted on location, it will be a two-pronged attack: Sweet Attila's Bakery and the Growling Rabbit Cafe.

I'm very happy that this location did not idle empty for long, it's a great spot just down the street from the beach.

I give the Alderman credit for trying, but this effort is somewhat futile in my opinion. Every year some volunteers gather up to head out and help beautify the 'hood, mostly by means of picking up empty bags of cheetoes (hint: visit cheetoes blog listed on right) and cigarette butts. This year, everyone interested can meet at 9:00 at Joe Moore's office on April 16th for a fun-filled day of trashing-picking-upping.

I would go, if I didn't already volunteer countless hours of picking up trash in front of my condo building. Hell, if it weren't for all the trash I picked up, I might actually be able to do some gardening that draws me outside to begin with. For some reason, the parkway in front of my building attracts thousands of empty plastic hooch bottles, 7-11 hot dog boxes, many thousands of cigarette butts, and of course...menu flyers from every sub-par dive restaurant within a 3 mile radius.

This IS NOT a picture of Glenwood Avenue in the 'hood, but could it look like this? FYI, this is a picture of historic Larimer Square in my hometown of Denver, CO.

Tonight the Alderman is having a meeting regarding proposed improvements to our neighborhood using menu money. One of the first items listed is a canopy of lights over Glenwood Avenue from Farwell to Lunt (a.k.a. the Glenwood Arts District). Immediately I thought of how Larimer Square really feels like a special place because of the lighting. With the El tracks right next to this stretch of Glenwood, it would really bring an interest in what we are trying to highlight here. And the lights give pedestrians an intimate feel of scale as they walk through.

I think it's a great idea, I hope it works out.

Brunch at Greenhouse Inn at Misericordia

This morning we wanted to try out a brunch spot that we had not before tested. Due to some mediocre reviews we read for a certain Evanston eatery, we were steered toward the Greenhouse for the opposite reason. According to Yelp, this place didn't get one single bad review.

We learned that the employees at the restaurant are volunteers, and that the proceeds go towards helping the residents there at Misericordia (located at 6300 N. Ridge). So that's a good way to start your Sunday morning.

The ambience is a little lacking, as a place should be that is non-profit. The wallpaper makes you feel like it is Easter Sunday all year long. But the food is quite good; not pretentious but well-done and with a decent variety. The pastries really hit the mark, and I'm not much of a pastry kind of guy. Other offerings included fruits/salad, pasta salad, lobster ravioli, egg casserole, pancakes with fresh fruit filling, and the traditional pork offerings (ham, bacon, sausage).

In the end, it can be summed up: no frills, good food, good cause.

New(ish) Coffee Shop on Devon

The Daily Cup is a new coffee shop to me, but from a bit of research it looks like it may have opened sometime in the second half of last year. Oops. I guess we have all been hibernating through the Chicago winter and don't get too far when we head outside.

This place is located at 1217 W. Devon (about three doors down from another coffee shop!) and it looks to be a great spot for a Loyola student to set up shop for a while. The vibe is definitely young, but we didn't feel unwelcome when we strolled in there with the baby. The coffee is good -- but actually more expensive than Starbuck's -- and they offered some baked goods and simple sandos, none of which we tried. There is a decent-sized collection of local artwork on display plastered all over the walls.

Good place, especially for students cramming for those pesky mid-terms.

New Doggy Do's

I was jogging down Sheridan yesterday and noticed that there is a new dog groomer open for business at 7007 N. Sheridan. I couldn't see a name on the outside, but I could see from the outside that there were two sides to the place: on the left was the grooming station, on the right there were certain doggy wares for sale.

We already have Roger's Bark, but I suppose some healthy competition can't hurt. I wonder if they wash cats, I have a couple of dirty ones.

Cross Rhodes in Evanston

We've lived here for almost five years now, and we're still finding joints in Evanston that blow us away. Chicago is just too big and overwhelming to try to tackle, that will take 20 years.

Today we tried Cross Rhodes, located at 913 Chicago Avenue. The experience can be summed up easily with two or three choice words: delicious, cheap, and more (please). Cross Rhodes offers Greek-American cuisine packaged within a casual but comfortable setting. I went no frills with the Gyro with the red sauce, for a whopping six bucks. There was enough meat on that sucka to fill two or three normal sandos, but it didn't stop me from plowing through it. Simple and extremely tasty. My wife had the Greek salad with chicken, but I have no idea how it tasted because my face was glued to my gyro. We also sampled the soups; both varieties we tried were very tasty.

What can I say?...this place is great. I guess they have been around a long time, and it is no secret to me why.

A couple of years ago a bartender up at the Rhythm Room in Evanston suggested we try Bat 17 (1709 Benson Ave., right behind the movie theater and El tracks) for some good eats. We made the mistake of not going and subsequently forgetting about the suggestion. Only now do I realize how wrong we were. We tried it today for lunch, and they offer probably the best sandwiches in the Chicago area, no joke.

The place feels like a renovated loft space, and it is fairly small. The atmosphere is great, though, and the joint is definitely popular. I would highly recommend timing your visit when your favorite team is playing on the tube. Bat 17 features a number of ridiculously large (and delicious) sandwiches, some original and well thought out side dishes, and a large selection of craft beers. Taste of Peru

If you live in Chicago and you haven't been to Taste of Peru, you need to go. If you live in Rogers Park and haven't been, you are fired!

The Taste of Peru is a little hole in the wall restaurant on Clark Street (6545 N.) that was once featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. We first went there a little over a year ago, and we had a great meal. The owner, Cesar, puts on a great show and the food is delicious. We brought in a bottle of Peruvian Pisco and he whipped up some cocktails for us to enjoy with our meal.

We were out for a walk today and we were passing by the restaurant. We didn't realize that they were open for lunch, but they are and we couldn't resist. We split the seafood paella, and it was an absolute knock-out. Ten out of ten.

What Happened Here?

As tax paying residents of Chicago, we should not be pleased by the snow removal efforts conducted by the park district last week at Loyola Park. I took this shot last week, noticing that one of the benches was damaged by the snow plow that cleared the sidewalk. We walked by again yesterday, now that most of the snow is melted, and the damage is WAY worse that I thought. Every single bench along Sheridan Road is damaged, some beyond repair. They also managed to damage a number of the trees, shear a fire hydrant in half, and take at least two metal trash cans out. Unreal.

A new mediterranean restaurant opened up on Sheridan Road, just north of Pratt. I noticed that they had been working on the interior of the space for some time, and they finally opened last week. We went in for a sample today.

I had the pork wrap, recommended highly by the owner. The pork was seasoned a bit, but somewhat bland. In the wrap was the meat and some fresh veggies and dill sauce bundled up by what looked to be a soft pita with a hint of crispness provided by a panini grill. The portion was great for the cost, but didn't knock my socks off.

My wife had the chicken plate with fresh salad (in lieu of fries). The chicken looked great, and was covered again with the same kind of dill sauce. The plate offered a ton of food for the price, but the chicken was so dry that there was hardly any taste left. Perhaps the chicken had been spinning on the spit too long. Dry and bland.

Not bad, in the end, but hopefully they can improve as time goes along.

Snow Removal!

This is the gargantuan beast of a machine that cleared the snow off of our quaint LITTLE street. We're all lucky that our cars didn't get crushed by this thing. I don't know how this thing managed to pick up the snow without ripping the asphalt off of the road.

Blizzard from the Pier

We are on the way back from the lighthouse on the Pratt pier, where we experienced driving snow pushed by hurricane force gales...and pure Chicago cold (not typically provided at hurricanes you may know).

Lake Shore Drive at this Hour

They warned us for days. Conservatively, even the misinformed or ignorant were warned for hours. But that didn't stop fools from trying to drive home on Lake Shore Drive tonight with 50 mph winds, blizzard conditions, and 25' foot waves from Lake Michigan crashing over the sea(lake) walls. In this age of information, what are these people doing still tring to take LSD home???? Didn't anyone learn from the blizzards in the 60's and 90's? Reportedly, there are hundreds of motorists stuck on LSD as we speak/write/blog.

We have had no shortage of warnings regarding the storm that approaches. It's kind of ridiculous how much we are being pumped with fear by our local and national media. In the words of our own Alderman:

"I urge you to prepare for the coming storm by ensuring you have adequate and appropriate supplies at your home and work. That way, if you need to remain indoors for the next few days, you will be prepared."

I am here to help you develop a checklist for items you will need to combat the effects of 20" of new snow and 50 mph gusting wind. Don't bother going to work today, tomorrow, and possibly Thursday. You know that no one will be working, only talking about or worrying about the storm. Stay home. Collect the following and enjoy:

- Much larger ration(s) of your vice(s), whether it be ice cream, whiskey, or kung fu movies.
- Extra batteries for the TV remote.
- A good book that you will think about reading but won't because you will be THAT lazy.
- The will to do very little.

I think you'll be satisfied with this plan.

High Speed Chase Ends in RP

Everyone wants to be in Rogers Park! Including the dude in the stolen cab this morning that started in Skokie, went over to Evanston and around a bit...then headed down to RP where he clipped a bus and ran into a pole.

I was watching events unfold on the news, where helicopters provided footage. I had to get to work, but as I went outside to head for the train I saw the birds making their way towards us. By the time I got on the El, the helicopters looked like they had come down into RP above Sheridan Road, and then headed west. The guy crashed out at Clark & Columbia (right in front of our friend's place).

Don't Ditch Jarvis Stop!

The Chicago Transit Authority is apparently considering closing the Jarvis 'El' platform in Rogers Park. There will be a discussion tomorrow night at CTA's "public scoping meeting" (Wednesday, January 26th), 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at New Field School, 1707 W. Morse (at Clark). The CTA is currently discussing options and proposals to upgrade both the Red and the Purple Line up here on the North Side.

It would be a shame to loose the Jarvis stop; this is one of the only areas where improvements have been made to the neighborhood. I've noticed before that it is not far from the Jarvis stop to Howard, but making it more difficult to get to the amenities at Jarvis is ill-advised. I would assume the businesses that are on Jarvis, trying to weather this economy, would agree. Let's not make life any more difficult for Charmer's, Gruppo di Amici, Taste, V-Tone, etc.

Gym Alternative

As far as I'm aware, we don't have too many exercise facilities at our disposal here in the 'hood. It seems that most people frequent the Bally up at Howard, despite the subpar facilities and overbooked nature of the gym. There are aerobic machines that are constantly in the state of disrepair or out of order, and the place is always crowded -- particularly now at the beginning of the year.

I've seen V-tone over on Jarvis, but it is pretty small. Looks good, but not too many available options as far as a diverse work-out.

Today I tried the Bally's at 3220 W. Touhy for a change. It is no larger than the Bally's on Howard, but there are way more cardio machines. It's not crowded and the locker room doesn't smell of fresh OR old urine. And the best part: there aren't weirdos from off the street wearing jeans and loafers on the weight machines (see Howard).

Still Dangerous

I just snapped this shot about 10 minutes ago, a pedestrian was hit on Sheridan, just south of Pratt. From the location, it looks like there may have been some jaywalking going on, but the guy looked banged up. Actually I didn't see him moving. Luckily there were many on hand to help and to cover him with a blanket. Let's hope he's okay.

And for the rest of us, be careful crossing Sheridan, it's chaos (even with the walk signal at the intersection proper).

My advice to newcomers to the city of Chicago: buy the deeded parking space, even if it costs $40 or $50K.

Today I was at the car wash, washing rat feces off of the engine block of my truck. This is the second time that rats have decided to enjoy the warmth under the hood. The first time they cost me about $700 in damage after they chewed through some of the wiring. While I was washing the crap away, I noticed something more annoying. Someone has stolen my spare tire from under my truck...AGAIN. The first time, I had to replace the mounting kit and cable that holds the tire, and I installed another cable with a padlock. Didn't matter, they cut through both and they've made off with my tire. WHY? It costs me hundreds to fix the damage, and they might make $20 bucks selling it. Really, we are stealing spare tires from underneath vehicles, cutting cables and locks to do so? It's not an I-Pad, it's a busted old spare tire.

Rats are chewing at my wiring, human rats are cutting my cables. All costing me boatloads of cash.

This is the spot where we jumped in the Lake last New Year's Day. NOW it's a thin sheet of ice that is surrounded by slushy lake water and packs of small snowbergs. How do you spell hypothermia, anyway?

Now I'm not sure about this whole thing! I survived last year, but the conditions were much better (if you can call the freezing cold pummeling waves 'better').

Ok, I haven't posted for a while, and I didn't want to jump in Lake Michigan on January 1st this year...but alas, both are happening.

I have gained weight, had a child, and I feel tired. So my natural impulse is to resist freezing my ass off when I have so many other things on my mind. But I guess this is an opportunity to live life instead of letting routine drive me into the ground.

Seems like all I blog about is food or restaurants. I guess I have turned into a true Chicagoan. When I first moved here from Denver, it seemed odd to me that people always wanted to know what new/good restaurants there are out there to try. Back home it was skiing, hiking, etc. Different world.

I digress.

Ropa has announced a killer deal for NYE this year. $50 for a three course meal, open bar, and live music. I don't think it's possible to beat that package.

Rub Company BBQ

The gluttony of the holiday weekend continued today with a little bit of BBQ love. We walked down to Rub Company, located at 2407 W. Lunt, to give this new joint a formal run. I had tried some of their stuff at one of the local festivals this summer, and it was pretty good.

I was pleasantly surprised with this joint. I liked the feel of the place inside -- it reminds me of the BBQ joints I went to as a kid growing up in Texas (a long time ago!). The wood paneled walls and cozy benches give that nice feel. But the food was simple but tasty. I had a 1/2 plate of bbq chicken and a 1/2 plate of brisket. The brisket was very tender and the rub was impressive. They offered three different sauces, all very delicious: the regular house sauce, a jalapeno sauce, and chipotle citrus. I think the sauces were the best part, despite the name on the sign.

Carribean American Bakery

We have been talking about the Carribean American Bakery (1539 W. Howard) since we sampled some of their goods at one of the dinner crawls a year or so ago. Today we finally managed to remember to stop by for another sampling.

Damn.

That stuff is super delicious, it will not be another year that will pass before I get back there. Today we each had a beef patty and a chicken curry patty. They were both extremely tasty. Next time we'll have to try on the jerk chicken patty. So good to eat a warm, doughy pastry filled with piping hot delicious meat filling on a cold day. It's a simple offering, but the meats and spices are absolutely delicious.

They also offer a full menu with different entrees available. Check them out ASAP.

WINTER Farmer's Market?

I didn't realize until I just got an email from Alderman Moore that we don't have to wait until spring for our next farmer's market. It's pretty cool, not to mention a rarity, to have this kind of feature available to us. The gallery space next to the Glenwood Bar will be used every other Sunday for the sale of local produce, meats, cheeses, and services. The following vendors will be there peddling their wares from 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. (list provided by the 49th Ward):

Pig-truck crash closes Indiana Toll ramp indefinitely

The crash of a pig-hauling truck Monday on the Indiana Toll Road caused structural damage that has forced the indefinite closure of the ramp from westbound I-90 to I-80/94, Indiana State Police said this morning.

Motorists normally using that exit at the 20.7 mile marker now will have to exit at the westbound Portage or I-65 exits, police said.

At about 11:42 a.m. Monday, a semi tractor-trailer rolled over after taking the westbound Toll Road ramp too fast and fell about 25 feet to the I-94 to I-90 westbound ramp. A number of the 79 pigs being taken to a farm in Michigan escaped and wandered onto the ramp and the grassy area separating the ramp from I-90 westbound traffic. A total of 23 pigs died.

Animal hauler trailers were brought in to take away the surviving pigs.

Dinner Crawl?

I thought I saw a flyer for the next RP dinner crawl for this Sunday, Oct. 24th. I found that tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com, but I can't find any information regarding the participating venues. This is KEY if the cost is going to be $25 or $30 (I don't want to sample the delicacies offered at 7-11). The crawl is/was scheduled for 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; they better get on the planning if this thing is going to happen!

Chuckie's is Now Open for Biz

That was a fast push through the rezoning process, Chuckie's is now open. It was strange to see this bar at first glance, it looks like it belongs in Bucktown or Wrigleyville, not RP. I guess we're trendy now?
The place looks nice, I stepped in and took a peek around. It is strictly bar fare with some light food options coming next week in the form of sandos, pizza slices, etc. Chuckie's is pretty small, but it's a good feel inside. The only thing I'm worrying about is the price...it's structured for a more happening 'hood at $6 a beer. I think I'll stick with Ropa for $3 per beer.

I've been browsing through the reader comments on the Heartland article that came out last week (Chicago Reader). I liked this lengthy piece from 'chicagoanalog':

I've been a resident of Rogers Park for more than a decade. The very first weekend I moved into my tiny studio apartment on Columbia next to the lake, I had breakfast at the Heartland Cafe. I loved the politically charged grass roots atmosphere, historic photographs and knick-knacks from the 60's and the 70's, the off beat vegetarian friendly menu and the eccentric waitstaff.

As the years went buy, friends started to buy in trendier areas, in more accessible parts of the city and having fallen in love with Rogers Park, I stayed and bought here.

I love Rogers Park. For all its flaws and shortcomings, its diversity, its vibrance, its grass roots history, its proximity to the lake. Hell, I even love the crazies wondering the streets and crowding under the el stop underpasses. And the Heartland Cafe, along with Michael James and Kathy Hogan are an ingrained part of our community. I for one am grateful that they staked a claim in a rough part of the city and built something that has served as a community outpost for two generations.

However, the fact remains and as Ms. Isaacs points out, the Heartland Cafe is a for profit business. For more than a decade I'm watched the Heartland Cafe spiral into a shoddily run enterprise. The food is profoundly overpriced - great, it's organic and socially responsible. I appreciate that, I truly do, however as a for profit business you are subject to the wills of the marketplace and it would appear that the increased price for these socially responsible food is not something most people easily swallow. Granted, I wish it was but the fact remains that it is not.

I haven't been to the heartland in 6 months. Why? Because if I'm going to spend $30 on breakfast, the quality of the food better be well worth it. And I am one of those people that would gladly pay more for socially conscious, organically raised food WHEN it's prepared well and when it's good quality. The Heartland has failed miserably at this for quite some time. Expensive, ill-prepared, poor quality food that often takes far, far, far too long to arrive.

Beyond the quality of the food, the waitstaff has become increasingly despondent and erratic. I get it, I love the charm of aspring artists, creative types, actors, poets, etc. I commend them for the courage they have to follow their passion. But once again, as the Heartland is a for-profit business, I expect a certain level of customer service. This once again has been lacking in recent years.

Mr. James & Ms. Hogan, the last time I ate at your restaurant, I waited for 45 minutes for 2 eggs, toast and bacon. It was 11:00 am on a Thursday morning. There were two waitstaff and perhaps 6 customers in the restaurant.

High prices, poor quality food, waitstaff that just don't give a shit and these recent issues with the city regarding sanitation. These were enough to send me away for a while.

So where do I go now? Like another commenter said, I make my way to Evanston. Lucky Platter is a great bet. $23 breakfast for two, pleasant waitstaff, quick service, good quality food. Blind Faith is another great option. This from someone who adores Rogers Park. It literally hurts me to have to get into my car on a Saturday morning and drive to another city for breakfast because I have no decent options in my community.

What did you think would happen? And I have to add my disgust at Mr. James' quote on not knowing how banks work. 30+ years in retail business and you don't know what overdraft fees are? Absurd.

As a for profit business in a market driven economy you have responsibilities to your customers. You've neglected those responsibilities for quite some time and let your business and your brand degrade. Now you have the gall to ask for a bailout?

I'm sorry to say this, but I'm happy to see you go. Perhaps we'll get some new owners, with a bit more business sense and less of a sense of entitlement in your place.

Good riddance, and we truly are sorry to see you go. Wish things could have been different but in the end, you only have yourself to blame.

Armadillo's Pillow in Trouble, TOO?

Someone must stop the madness. Businesses in RP are few and far between as it is, given the density of this neighborhood. I've just heard a rumor that Armadillo's Pillow might be struggling after 17 some-odd years here. It's a great little bookstore, and I would be really bummed to see them go.

Apparently there is some crackdown on signage laws and the City is enforcing the law. Certainly that can't be the last straw that breaks the Pillow's back, but there has to be something we can do to help.

I know! Buy some books! Read some books!

Body Count

I happen to be in the position where today I could go for a quick jog at lunch time along the lake shore down at Loyola Beach. I'm not sure if it's normal during the middle of the day to see as many corpses as I did today.

First, by the pier, I saw a large dead fish...origin and species unknown. Seemed pretty normal to see this. As I jogged further to the north, I saw a big Canadian goose right on the beach that was absolutely filthy and looked have had a broken neck. Looks like Chicago-style mafia hit got him. Then, about a quarter of a mile north of that, I see a dead gull that looked to have croaked in mid-yawn. He was further from the water. And then I ran passed a couple of the park guys that were trying to get something pulled out from the tall grasses...must have been something big. I hope it wasn't Jay Cutler after the NY Football Giants pummelled him.

Lastly I saw a squished dead grease-ball of a rat in the alley behind our building. Nice.

That's five bodies in a little over 2.5 miles of jogging. The moral: run less.

Holy Punjab!

We just had lunch at Tiffin Indian Kitchen at 2536 W. Devon, right here in West Rogers Park. The title of this post sums it up. We are really lucky to have access to such cultural fusion, where we can find ourselves in the middle of Little India just a couple of miles from home.

Tiffin was rated #1 Indian food in Chicago (at tenbest.com), so we had to sample. We've had a couple of the other Indian spots in the area as well as Mt. Everest in Evanston and India House downtown. The verdict? Can't beat it. The buffet is only $10.95 (cheaper than India House and Mt. Everest), and there is a better selection. The chicken tikka masala and the matter paneer didn't miss the mark...actually, everything was really tasty. I highly recommend that you get off the couch and try this place.

Not Good Days on the Far North Side

Chicago Streets & San

I honestly cannot believe that what I report is true.

Late yesterday afternoon, my wife and I looked up from the sidewalk below in front of our building and saw a huge branch from an oak tree looming precariously over the walkway. I noticed right away that it looked different than it usually does -- it was sitting down far lower. I walked just a bit further east and noticed that there was a sizable crack where the branch met the trunk of the tree...the thing was ready to fall. With all the wind blowing around here like it's going out of style, we decided that we had to let the City know about it. After all, Pratt is heavily trafficked by pedestrians, and truly someones life could be at danger if that thing had snapped off. I would guess that branch weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 pounds.

What I can't believe is that we (one of our neighbors) called 311 yesterday, on Labor Day...and that they were out here first thing this morning to saw that sucker off. Responsive? Check. Efficient? Check. Confused? Yes, I am.

Act One Cafe Revisited

Last night we were offered a reprieve from our parental duties and we went to the Mayne Stage for dinner and a show. What I can say using only a few words: it was fantastic.

First we went to Act One for dinner. We had only been there once, for brunch, and we weren't able to provide rave reviews. Last night was different, and in a very good way. I had the roast chicken with bacon gremolata, and it was absolutely delicious. When you think about a plain dish like roast chicken, you don't typically have high expections -- but the skin was perfectly seasoned and crispy, and the meat was tender and juicy. We started out with calamari, which is overplayed these days, but it was actually better than most places. The dipping sauce was spicy and unique and the calamari had good texture and was not over-breaded. I give the meal an 8 out of 10.

The show was also very good. When you have an opportunity to go to a show, take it. The room is so nice and the acoustics are perfect. The sound is crystal clear there isn't a bad seat in the house with this small, intimate theater.

Trouble at the Beach

...just saw 4 or 5 fire trucks roll by, so I thought I would pop out to see what's going on. Wait, now there are 6 fire trucks, some ambuli and a coast guard helicopter flying around. Word on the street is that they are looking for someone in the water. Not good.
